Integrative oncology – experts talking online

What does integrative oncology mean? What additional supportive treatments are available? How are they used? These and other important questions were discussed online in a workshop with affected parents, survivors and specialists at the “Integrative Oncology” evening at the end of September. The evening was hosted by the Head of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Prof. Katrin Scheinemann, MD, and Susanne Reubke, MD, interim senior physician at the Centre for Integrative Medicine, who both work at the Ostschweizer children’s hospital in St. Gallen. An affected mother spoke about her personal experience with integrative oncology.

Integrative oncology is a form of cancer treatment that combines conventional medical treatments with complementary therapies and holistic approaches. The main goal is to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and support their health holistically while simultaneously considering conventional cancer therapy.

The “children’s oncology themed evenings” were launched in 2023 by the parent groups of Swiss Childhood Cancer Aid in collaboration with Prof. Katrin Scheinemann, MD, and take place four times a year. Important questions on the latest issues in paediatric oncology are discussed online. The numerous participants and positive feedback show that there is a great need among those affected to find out more about these important topics.

The next and also last themed evening of the year is taking place on 13 November and will be focussing on fertility.
